
Cal Poly Claims Third Place in Season-Opening NKU Fall Classic

BATAVIA, Ohio — Led by Thomas Lehman, the Cal Poly men's golf team finished a strong third in the season-opening NKU Fall Classic hosted by Northern Kentucky University on Monday at the Elks Run Golf Club.
Lehman carded a two-over-par 73 on the 6,845-yard, par-71 course, finishing with a 15-over-par 228 total and a tie for 38th place. He moved up 12 spots from Sunday's 36 holes of play.
Grady Smith was Cal Poly's top finisher, placing in a tie for 16th place with an eight-over-par 221 total following a final-round 74. Teammate Jimmy Castles also finished in the top 20, placing in a tie for 20th place with three other golfers at 223 after a 75 Monday.
Nick Engelhardt (pictured above) and Nathan Clark both finished in a tie for 24th place with three others, all with 224 totals. Engelhardt carded a final-round 75 and Clark a 77.
Butler captured the team title with a 54-hole 16-over-par 868 total after a final-round four-person 12-over-par 296. Oakland was four shots back at 872 with a 281, the best round of the day.
Cal Poly was another 11 shots back at 883, following Sunday's 296 and 290 with a 297 on Monday. There were 15 teams in the two-day tournament.
Nick Wilkins of Morehead State was medalist with a one-under-par 212 total after a final-round 69. He finished one shot ahead of both Patrick Allgeier of Butler and Max Palmer of Robert Morris. Allgeier, the second-round leader, carded a 73 Monday and Palmer a 68.
Smith finished tied for 12th place in par-4 scoring at five over par and was tied for eighth in par-5 scoring at one under par.
Castles, who recorded a hole-in-one in the second round Sunday, was one of three golfers in the field with eagles. Engelhardt finished tied for third with his 39 pars.
Cal Poly returns to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Nick Watney Invitational hosted by Fresno State at the Sunnyside Golf Club.
