
Cal Poly Beach Volleyball Splits on Day One of Big West Challenge

HUNTINGTON BEACH – The Cal Poly beach volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Big West Challenge in Huntington Beach, Calif., as it beat CSUN 3-2 and fell to No. 5 Hawai'i 4-1.
The Mustangs started the challenge off against CSUN, where the No. 1 pair of Emily Sonny and Hannah Hubbard beat Julie Haake and Katie Sato 21-18, 21-10.
The Mustangs No. 2 pair of Taylor Nelson and Adlee Van Winden beat Mattie Leiphardt and Nicki Williams 21-14, 21-17.
At the No. 3 spot, Raeann Greisen and Heather Pembroke won their first set against Erin Indermill and Aeryn Owens, but then fell in their last two, losing 17-21, 21-15, 16-14.
The No. 4 pair of Anna Gorman and Savannah Niemen had a close match against Kristey Markle and Autumn Russell and came out with a win 21-21, 24-22.
Dora Beilin and Holland Boege, the Mustangs' No. 5 pair, put up a fight against Nic Pinkney and Nico Stork, as they took the match to three sets but couldn't hold on, as they fell 18-21, 21-19, 15-8.
The Mustangs' win over the Matadors gives them their third straight conference win of the season.
Up 1-0 on the day, the Mustangs took on No. 5 Hawai'i, where they fell to the Rainbow Warriors 4-1.
Sonny and Hubbard lost their first set to Morgan Martin and Mikayla Tucker, but came back to win the next two, winning the match at the No. 1 position 14-21, 24-22, 18-16.
Ka'iwi Schucht and Nikki Taylor defeated Nelson and Van Winden 21-16, 21-19, while Emily Maglio and Laurel Weaver beat Greisen and Pembroke 21-10, 21-16.
Norene Iosia and Hannah Zalapony beat Gorman and Niemen 21-18, 21-17, while Ari Homayun and Carly Kan beat Beilin and Boege 21-16, 21-14.
The Mustangs are now 3-1 in conference play and 9-9 overall. Cal Poly will be back in the sand tomorrow to conclude the Big West Challenge, as it will be taking on No. 6 Long Beach State at 9:30 a.m. and Sacramento State at 2 p.m.
