SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Seven San Diego State pitchers combined to hand Cal Poly its fourth shutout of the 2017 baseball season as the Aztecs completed a sweep of their three-game series against the Mustangs with a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
With its ninth loss in the last 10 games, Cal Poly fell to 2-9 on the year, playing its first 11 contests on the road. San Diego State improved to 8-4.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs will play their home opener Tuesday against CSU Bakersfield at 6 p.m. inside Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly had its chances Sunday, producing 15 baserunners. One was picked off first base, another was erased on a double play and 13 were left stranded on the basepaths, including nine in scoring position.
The Mustangs had at least two runners on base five times Sunday and left the bases loaded in the ninth. For the season, Cal Poly is hitting .159 with runners in scoring position and .133 with the bases loaded. In addition, Mustang pinch-hitters are 0-for-10.
Sophomore right-hander Bobby Ay (0-2) pitched well enough to win most games, allowing two runs (one earned) and three hits over 5 1/3 innings, but as with most of the starting pitchers so far this season, received little or no run support.
The win went to Hayden Petrovick (2-0) as he pitched four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks with one strikeout. CJ Saylor allowed a hit and two walks in the ninth, but struck out two for his fourth save.
Mustang sophomore second baseman Kyle Marinconz grounded out to shortstop on a very close play at first base with the bases loaded for the final out of the game.
Despite the loss, Cal Poly outhit San Diego State 8-3. The Aztecs left just two runners on base, making efficient use of their few scoring opportunities by tallying single runs in the third and sixth innings. Alan Trejo doubled with one out to knock in the run in the third and Danny Sheehan singled with two outs to drive in the sixth-inning run.
Cal Poly's eight hits included first baseman Scott Ogrin's (pictured above) first three collegiate hits, all singles. Sophomore center fielder Alex McKenna added two singles while sophomore catcher Nick Meyer and senior third baseman Michael Sanderson contributed doubles.
Meyer also picked off one Aztec runner at first base, his first of the year, and threw out another trying to steal second base, his fourth caught steal of the season. A year ago, Meyer picked off 10 runners and threw out 22 would-be base stealers en route to the Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year award.
