
Cal Poly Beach Volleyball Goes 2-0 First Day in Malibu

SAN LUIS OBISPO- The Cal Poly beach volleyball team went 2-0 Friday afternoon, as it swept Irvine Valley College 5-0 and beat Concordia 4-1 in Malibu, Calif.
The Mustangs started their first match off against IVCC, where the No. 1 pair of Emily Sonny and Hannah Hubbard easily beat their opponents 21-12, 21-5, while Adlee Van Winden and Taylor Nelson picked up a quick 21-7, 22-4 win at the No. 2 spot.
Raeann Greisen and Heather Pembroke, the Mustang's No. 3 pair won 21-15, 21-16, while Savannah Niemen and Anna Gorman won 21-8, 21-4 at the No. 4 spot.
Taylor Gruenewald and Brayden Gruenewald beat their opponents 21-19, 21-12 at the No. 5 position, giving the Mustangs their second sweep of the season.
Cal Poly took on Concordia in its second match of the day, beating the Eagles 4-1.
Sonny and Hubbard pushed their opponents to three sets at the No. 1 position, but couldn't hold on, as they fell 21-12, 16-21, 9-15.
Van Winden and Nelson won 22-20, 21-13, while Greisen and Pembroke won 21-13, 21-16.
Niemen and Gorman picked up a quick win at the No. 4 position, 21-14, 21-15, while Dora Beilin and Holland Boege moved up from the No. 6 position to the No. 5 position and beat their opponents 22-20, 21-19.
The Mustangs will finish off their weekend in Malibu on Saturday, as they will take on CSU Bakersfield and No. 2 Pepperdine.
