
Cal Poly Finishes Second in Del Walker Intercollegiate

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Jimmy Castles fired a 67 and Grady Smith added a 69, but the Cal Poly men's golf team, ahead of Boise State by 10 strokes when play was suspended due to darkness Monday, finished four shots behind the Broncos at the 21st Del Walker Classic hosted by Long Beach State.
Castles (pictured at right) finished fifth with a one-over-par 211 total on the 6,562-yard, par-70 Virginia Country Club course while Smith claimed ninth place with a 213 aggregate.
Boise State topped the 17-team field with a 15-over-par 855 total for 54 holes after a final-round four-person 284 total, best of the day. Cal Poly posted a 296 aggregate for an 859 total, 19 over par, and Pacific was third at 865.
Individual winner was Brian Humphreys of Boise State with rounds of 70, 68 and 71 for a one-under-par 209 total, one shot ahead of Loyola Marymount's Riley Elmes, Southern Utah's Fidel Conception and Boise State's Mason Schulze.
In addition to Castles and Smith, Cal Poly's other scoring golfers were Cole Nygren, 17th place with a final-round 73 for a 217 total; Justin De Los Santos with a 76 for a 218 total and 22nd place; and Jesse Yap, 31st with a 78 for a 220 total.
Competing as individuals were Nick Engelhardt, 34th following an 81 for a 221 total, and Jordan Wright, 51st after a 77 for a 225 total.
De Los Santos finished tied for first in par-3 scoring at minus two while Castles was tied for fourth in par-4 scoring at plus two. Engelhardt topped the field in par-5 scoring at minus six.
Engelhardt was one of eight players to card an eagle in the tournament. He also was sixth in birdies with 11 while Nygren's 38 pars were tied for No. 2.
Cal Poly returns to action March 18-19 at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on the ASU Karsten Course in Tempe, Ariz.
