BERKELEY, Calif. – Cal Poly jumped to a 6-1 lead and held on for a season-opening 6-4 victory over Cal at Evans Diamond on Saturday.

Cal won the nightcap 4-3, taking advantage of three Mustang errors.

In the opener, Alex McKenna had three hits and two RBI while Josh George added a pair of one-run doubles for Cal Poly. Michael Sanderson and Kevin Morgan each added two hits.

Junior right-hander Erich Uelmen (1-0) allowed three runs (two earned) and 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings for the win. Spencer Howard scattered six hits over 2 2/3 innings and Michael Clark threw one pitch for his first save.

Cal outhit Cal Poly 17-13, led by third baseman Denis Karas with four singles.

Karas tied the nightcap at 3-3 with a solo home run in the fifth inning and Cal scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on a Cal Poly error with the bases loaded.

Cal Poly was limited to just four hits in the second game, including a solo home run by Nick Meyer in the second inning, tying the game at 1-1, and a two-run shot by Kevin Morgan (pictured above) in the fifth frame, giving Cal Poly a 3-2 lead.

Southpaw Kyle Smith (0-1) allowed four runs (three earned) and six hits over 5 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.

Joey Matulovich (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings for the win and Erik Martinez, despite giving up two singles to open the ninth, earned the save with three strikeouts.

Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 10 a.m. with junior right-hander Jarred Zill to start on the mound for Cal Poly.
