
Six Cal Poly Wrestlers to Compete in Midlands Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly will send six of its top wrestlers to the prestigious Midlands Championships on Friday and Saturday.
The two-day meet, normally held inside historic Welsh-Ryan Arena on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, just outside Chicago, has been moved this year to Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates due to the $110 million renovation of the 64-year-old facility.
Cal Poly will be joined by 37 of the nation's top wrestling programs, including No. 9 Arizona State and Oregon State of the Pac-12 Conference and No. 2 Penn State,No. 3 Michigan, No. 6 Lehigh and No. 8 Iowa.
Atop Cal Poly's list of entrants is 197-pound sophomore Tom Lane (pictured above), who sports an 8-3 record after a second-place finish in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 17. Among Lane's eight wins so far this year are one fall, a pair of 16-0 technical falls and two major decisions.
Mustangs 141-pound senior Colton Schilling, held out of the Reno Tournament of Champions, is 4-2 for the season while Matt Wilhelm (7-4) and Spencer Empey (3-5) both placed sixth at Reno at 174 and 285 pounds, respectively.
Others scheduled to compete are Sohrab Movahedi (2-2) at 184 pounds and Joshy Cortez (4-5) at 149 pounds.
Two sessions will be held each day. Action will be held on 10 mats for both of Friday's sessions at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Central Time. Semifinals and consolation matches begin at noon Central on Saturday, with the final session for first-, third- and fifth-place matches slated for 7 p.m.
