SEATTLE — Cal Poly had its three-game winning streak snapped at the Husky Nike Invitational on Friday night, falling to tournament host Washington 3-0 in Husky Soccer Stadium despite a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
The Mustangs earned their first corner just 34 seconds after kickoff, but Washington was able to come up with the set-piece clearance.
Seven minutes later, the Huskies (3-1-0) — 10th in the others-receiving-votes category in the latest coaches Top 25 poll — got on the board when Havana McElvaine lobbed a high-arcing pass from the left flank nearly 30 yards overhead to Kimberly Keever, who headed the ball into the net from her position a few steps above the right post.
Cal Poly (3-2-0) also lined up a corner opportunity in the 18th minute, leading to the most recent Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore Caitlyn Kreutz, ricocheting off the post.
Mustang freshman Jessica Johnson, coming off a golden-goal performance against Saint Mary's last week, also tested UW goalkeeper Sarah Shimer twice before halftime, forcing saves in the 17th and 25th minutes.
Meanwhile, fellow freshman Sophia Brown, making her fifth collegiate start in goal, stopped shots in the 21st (by Pascale Dumesnil) and 38th (from Becca Schoales) minutes.
The Mustangs also took corners on 52' (leading to a shot by sophomore Kelly Kessloff that was blocked), 53' and 56', but UW scored in the 59th when Shannon Simon, a recent USWNT U-20 camp invitee, blasted a left-footed strike into the right side of the netting from atop the penalty area.
After another corner by Cal Poly (75'), Asia Brisco tallied unassisted in the 78th by sliding a nine-yard shot inside the right post.
McKenzie Flood placed an 85th-minute shot on goal, followed by the Mustangs' final corner of the match in the 86th.
Cal Poly will return to the 16th annual invitational to face Portland (2-1-1) at 12 noon Sunday.
