
Cal Poly Finishes Ninth in ASU Thunderbird Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Cal Poly men's golf team, in ninth place after the first and second rounds of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, finished ninth following the final round Sunday at the Karsten Golf Course.
Cole Nygren (pictured at right) climbed 20 spots on the final day of the 54-hole event, carding a two-under-par 69 for a one-over-par 214 total and a tie for 20th place. Nygren posted rounds of 70 and 75 on Saturday.
Jesse Yap finished tied for 33rd place while Justin De Los Santos finished 41st.
Jon Rahm of Arizona State claimed the individual title with a 15-under-par 198 total on his home course following a final-round 68. Rahm finished three strokes ahead of Nick Voke of Iowa State, who posted a 65 Sunday. K.K. Limbhasut of Cal was third with a 10-under-par 203 aggregate.
Iowa State captured the team title in the 13-school event with a four-person 20-under-par 832 total, edging Cal by one shot. San Diego State was third at minus-17 while Arizona State finished fourth at minus-16.
Yap carded a final-round 74 for a 218 total while De Los Santos posted a 76 for a 220 aggregate. Also scoring for Cal Poly were Jordan Wright with a 75 for a 224 total and 54th place and Cam Price with a 73 for a 228 total and 62nd place.
Wright finished sixth in par-3 scoring at even par while Nygren was ninth in par-4 scoring at minus-1. Nygren also was fourth with 36 pars.
Cal Poly returns to action April 11-12 at the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate on the Sandpiper Golf Course.
