
Cal Poly Wins Twice to Advance in Big West Beach Volleyball Tournament

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The fifth-seeded Cal Poly beach volleyball team opened the first-ever Big West Conference Beach Volleyball Tournament with a 3-2 victory over fourth-seeded CSU Bakersfield on Friday morning at the Beach Blvd. Courts. After Cal Poly fell to top-seeded Hawai'i, 5-0 in the winner's bracket, the Mustangs eliminated sixth-seeded Sacramento State, 4-1 to remain alive in the double-elimination tournament.
Cal Poly is scheduled to continue play at 10:30 a.m. Saturday against third-seeded CSUN, who eliminated fourth-seeded CSU Bakersfield, 3-2. The winner of Saturday's elimination match between Cal Poly and CSUN will take on the loser of No. 1 Hawai'i and No. 2 Long Beach State at 9 a.m.
Top-seeded Hawai'i is scheduled to face second-seeded Long Beach State at 9 a.m. Saturday. The winner of that match advances to face the lone survivor from the elimination bracket at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. If necessary, a second match will take place at 3 p.m. to determine a champion.
Cal Poly junior Anna Gorman and sophomore Savannah Niemen won their matchup against the Roadrunners after taking the final set, 17-15 from the third position, clinching the first victory of the day for the Mustangs.
After the Rainbow Wahine swept the Mustangs, Cal Poly faced elimination against Sacramento State on Friday afternoon and turned in four victories in five matchups to overwhelm and eliminate the Hornets from contention.
