Six-Game Winning Streak Snapped as Cal Poly Falls to California, 5-4

BERKELEY, Calif. – A two-run home run by Robbie Tenerowicz wiped out a 3-1 Cal Poly lead and No. 20 California went on to beat the No. 19 Mustangs 5-4 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Evans Diamond.
Nick Halamandaris snapped the 3-3 deadlock with a run-scoring double in the sixth inning and Cal added an insurance run in the seventh on Brian Celsi's RBI single as the Golden Bears, which had lost eight of their last 12 games after an 18-6 start, improved to 23-14 on the year.
Cal Poly, which dropped a 7-1 decision to Cal two weeks ago in Baggett Stadium, had a six-game winning streak snapped Tuesday, falling to 25-14.
Cal Poly built its 3-1 advantage with three sacrifice flies in the first five innings.
Kyle Marinconz led off the game with a single, advanced to third on a double by Nick Meyer and came home on a sacrifice fly by Brett Barbier.
In the third, Marinconz again led off with a single and Meyer and Barbier followed with singles to load the bases with nobody out. John Schuknecht's sacrifice fly scored Marinconz but Cal Poly stranded the other two runners.
Barbier was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning for the 14th time this season and eventually came home on Michael Sanderson's sacrifice fly, giving the Mustangs a 3-1 lead.
Cal Poly, which stranded six runners in the game, got the leadoff batter on base in each of the first six innings, but the next nine Mustang batters of the game were retired in order.
Cal Poly's seven hits included two singles by Marinconz and a single and double by Meyer (pictured above). The fourth through ninth batters in the Mustang order went 0-for-17 until collecting two hits in the ninth.
Barbier extended his hitting streak to 15 games and his streak of reaching base safely to 39 games.
Tenerowicz, Halamandaris and Celsi each had two of Cal's eight hits.
The loss spoiled a fine pitching performance by Mustang freshman right-hander Bobby Ay, who allowed one run and three hits over five innings in his first collegiate start with no walks and three strikeouts. He left the game with a 3-1 lead.
Freshman southpaw Thomas Triantos (2-1) suffered the loss as he gave up three runs and four hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Akaash Agarwal (1-0), the fifth of seven Cal pitchers, secured five outs for the win. Erik Martinez, seeking his eighth save, worked 2 1/3 innings but gave up a double to Cooper Moore and a single to pinch-hitter Dylan Doherty in the ninth, forcing Cal to bring in Keaton Siomkin from the bullpen.
Marinconz drove in Moore on a fielder's choice and Meyer popped out to second base to end the game.
Cal Poly, tied for first place with Cal State Fullerton in the Big West Conference standings, resumes Big West play this weekend with a three-game series Friday through Sunday at Long Beach State.
