
Cal Poly Defeats Sacramento State and Boise State on Saturday

FOLSOM, Calif. – The Cal Poly beach volleyball team won a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating both Sacramento State and Boise State by identical 3-2 scores at Livermore Community Park. The Mustangs won two matches in succession for the third time this season, and improved to 6-9 overall.
Cal Poly had three pairs win two matchups on Saturday, including the No. 1 tandem of sophomore Taylor Nelson and freshman Adlee Van Winden. Cal Poly's No. 2 duo of sophomore Savannah Niemen and junior Anna Gorman also won twice, as did the No. 3 team of sophomore Raeann Greisen and freshman Katherine Brouker.
Against Sacramento State, Nelson and Van Winden fought back to beat the Hornet duo of Sloan Lovett and Maddie Cannon, 21-16, 16-21, 15-8. Niemen and Gorman ousted Lauren Aikels and Morgan Stanley, 21-19, 23-21 and Greisen and Brouker downed the Hornets' Lexie Skalbeck and Lana Brown in straight sets, 21-14 and 21-15 to cement the match win for the Mustangs.
Against Boise State, Cal Poly fought back on three separate occasions to claim victory, as all three wins came in come-from-behind fashion. After dropping their opening set to Maddy O'Donnell and Hannah Hubbard, Cal Poly's Nelson and Van Winden grabbed the last two sets to win in three, 22-24, 21-19 and 15-13.
Niemen and Gorman lost the first set against Sierra Nobley and Sarah Baugh, but clawed back to win in three, 15-21, 21-19 and 15-10. Cal Poly's Greisen and Brouker collected their second victory of the day with a three-set triumph over BSU's Kaitlyn Oliver and Maddi Osburn, 22-20, 15-21 and 15-7.
Nelson and Van Winden improved to 3-2 overall this season from the first position, while Niemen and Gorman won for the first time when paired together. Greisen and Brouker, also playing together for the first time, collected their first wins as a unit.
Cal Poly (6-9 overall) returns home to host CSU Bakersfield at 2 p.m. Friday, April 22 and both Gavilan College (9 a.m.) and Santa Barbara City College (1 p.m.) on Saturday, April 23. All three matches will be played at the Pismo Beach Volleyball Courts.
