SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Jimmy Castles led a quartet of Mustang top-10 finishers as Cal Poly captured its second team championship in a month, claiming the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Sandpiper Golf Club.
Castles finished fourth with a three-under-par 213 total while Cole Nygren, Justin De Los Santos and Jesse Yap also finished in the top 10 as Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs posted a four-person 291 total on the 7,068-yard, par-72 course adjacent to the Pacific Ocean.
Cal Poly, which led by seven strokes after two rounds of play Monday, beat Grand Canyon by 10 strokes, posting a two-under-par 54-hole 862 total. The Mustangs were the only team to finish under par in the nine-team field. UC Santa Barbara finished third with a 10-over-par 874 aggregate.
"We played really well Monday over 36 holes, then had to battle through some adversity today with some lost balls," Cartwright said. "We led by only four after 11 holes but pulled away over the last seven holes and won by 10."
Castles carded a final-round 72 to go with Monday's 74 and 70 for his 213 total and fourth place alone.
Felix Mory of CSUN earned medalist honors with an eight-under-par 208 total, followed by Brandon Bauman of UC Santa Barbara and Daniel Chian of Long Beach State, who shared second place at 212.
Nygren added a 73 to go with his 72 and 69 Monday for a 214 total and a tie for fifth place with Mark Cobey of Cal State Fullerton.

Competing as an individual, Jordan Wright finished 37th with a 76 for a 228 aggregate.
Nygren and Castles shared second place in par-4 scoring at two under par while De Los Santos was second in par-5 scoring at minus-five. Nygren was four under par on the par-5 holes.
Yap carded an eagle in the tournament while Nygren was second, De Los Santos third and Castles fourth in birdies with 14, 13 and 12, respectively.
