
Cal Poly Rallies to Defeat San Francisco 2-1 in Opener of Series

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Four singles and an intentional walk in the bottom of the ninth inning produced two runs and Cal Poly's third walk-off victory in 10 games, a 2-1 decision over San Francisco in the opener of a doubleheader and three-game non-conference series Friday afternoon in Baggett Stadium.
Senior right fielder John Schuknecht tied the game with a single to left field and freshman first baseman Cooper Moore (pictured above) capped the uprising with another single to left field, ending the 2-hour, 17-minute game.
Second game of the doubleheader will begin at 4:10 p.m.
Cal Poly was held scoreless for eight innings by Anthony Shew, who scattered four hits over seven frames, and Frank Waliczek, who struck out two in the eighth inning.
James Kannenberg (0-1) pitched the ninth inning for the Dons and allowed both runs, all four hits and the walk as Cal Poly improved to 8-2 for the season. San Francisco fell to 2-9.
Sophomore southpaw Kyle Smith pitched eight brilliant innings for Cal Poly but received no run support. He allowed one run and three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Redshirt freshman Austin Dondanville (1-0) pitched the ninth inning and picked up the win, striking out one.
Cal Poly's eight hits included two singles each by Brett Barbier, Kyle Marinconz and Schuknecht. San Francisco's four hits were by four different players. Second baseman Aaron Ping knocked in the lone Don run with a single in the eighth inning.
All 12 hits in the game were singles.
