WICHITA, Kansas – Sophomore right-hander Erich Uelmen earned his fourth victory, junior righty Justin Calomeni picked up his second save and Cal Poly, which at one time led by four, held on to beat Wichita State 7-6 in the final game of a three-game non-conference series Saturday afternoon in Eck Stadium.
Uelmen (4-0) struck out a career-high eight batters and won despite giving up five runs and eight hits over 6 2/3 innings. Calomeni (pictured above) retired the first four batters he faced before allowing a run and two hits in the ninth, but got pinch-hitter Taylor Sanagorski to ground out to first base with the bases loaded, ending the game.
With the win, Cal Poly wins the series, two games to one, and improves to 15-7 for the season. The Mustangs have won four of six series. Wichita State, which hasn't won a series since the opening weekend of the season against Northern Colorado, fell to 7-16.
Cal Poly built 3-0, 4-1 and 7-3 leads in the first six innings.
An RBI single by Michael Sanderson in the first inning, a run-scoring single by Alex McKenna in the second and a bloop RBI single by Ben Polshuk in the third gave the Mustangs their early 3-0 advantage.
After Wichita State scored a run in the fourth on Greyson Jenista's second home run of the season, Cal Poly responded with a bloop single to left for an RBI by Cooper Moore in the fifth for a 4-1 lead.
Wichita State pulled to within a run with two in the fifth before John Schuknecht smashed a two-run double in the sixth. Sanderson added a sacrifice fly in the inning for a 7-3 Cal Poly cushion.
Wichita State scored twice in the seventh to trim Cal Poly's lead to 7-5 and tallied a run in the ninth and had the bases loaded before Sanagorski's grounder to first base. Brett Barbier bobbled the ball, but had time to flip to Calomeni covering the bag in time to end the game.
Cal Poly collected 10 hits, Schuknecht and Sanderson leading the way with a single and a double, both driving in two runs. Moore contributed two singles and one RBI.
Alec Bohm produced two doubles and a single to lead Wichita State's 10-hit attack and Zack Reding, Luke Ritter and Mikel Mucha all had two hits.
Cal Poly wrapped up a 10-game road trip with Saturday's victory and will play eight of its next nine games inside Baggett Stadium, beginning Tuesday night against CSU Bakersfield at 6 o'clock.
The Mustangs also host San Jose State for a three-game weekend series Friday through Sunday.
