SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State tallied a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and held on to beat Cal Poly 3-2 in the finale of a three-game non-conference baseball series Sunday afternoon at John Smith Field.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs erased a 2-0 deficit with single runs in the fifth and eighth frames before the Hornets regained the lead on Andrew McWilliam's second RBI single up the middle in the game.
With the win, Sacramento State salvaged one win in the series and improved to 10-8. Cal Poly, which clinched the series by sweeping Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 6-4 and 4-0, fell to 13-6.
After Sacramento State scored twice on three hits and an error in the first inning, Cal Poly answered with a run in the fifth on Nick Meyer's groundout to third base and another run in the eighth on Alex McKenna's sacrifice fly to center field.
Tyler Beardsley (2-0), who surrendered his first earned run of the season in the eighth inning, missing a chance for his fifth save, earned the victory while Justin Calomeni (2-2) suffered his second tough loss in eight days. Calomeni took the loss when Grand Canyon notched a walk-off 3-2 win last Sunday in Phoenix.
Mustang starter Cam Schneider pitched five innings, allowing one earned run and five hits with seven strikeouts, while Spencer Howard (pictured above) tossed two scoreless frames in relief before giving way to Calomeni.
Cal Poly's five hits were singles by five different players. Brett Barbier extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a fourth-inning single and he and Michael Sanderson both have reached base in all 19 games this season.
Sacramento State collected 11 hits, including three by Matt Smith and two each by McWilliam and Kody Reynolds.
The Mustangs play two more non-conference series before opening Big West play April 8.
Cal Poly concludes a 10-game road trip with a three-game set at Wichita State on Thursday through Saturday and will host San Jose State on April 1-3. The Shockers are 6-13 after losing two of three games at Nebraska this weekend.
