
Wichita State Wins Opener of Cal Poly Series With 6-0 Victory

WICHITA, Kansas – Junior right-hander Willie Schwanke scattered five hits over eight innings as Wichita State won the opener of a three-game non-conference baseball series against Cal Poly with a 6-0 victory Thursday night in chilly Eck Stadium.
The Shockers scored three times in the third inning and added an insurance run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to improve to 7-14 for the season. Wichita State was coming off a 17-0 loss to No. 22 Oklahoma State on Tuesday.
Cal Poly, held to five hits in the first meeting ever between the two schools, slipped to 13-7.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs stranded a pair of runners on base in each of the first two innings and wasted a leadoff double by John Schuknecht in the fourth, stranding five runners on the basepaths.
Schwanke retired the side in order in three of his final four innings of work on the mound, finishing with a five-hitter over eight innings. He struck out six and walked two as Cal Poly was shut out for the second time this season.
Mustang freshman shortstop Dylan Doherty had two of Cal Poly's five hits, both singles.
Wichita State's nine hits included two singles and a double by first baseman Ryan Tinkham and two singles by right fielder Greyson Jenista.
Freshman southpaw Justin Bruihl (0-1), in his first collegiate start, suffered the loss, allowing the three runs in the third inning. Redshirt freshman Austin Dondanville (pictured above) pitched well in relief, allowing one run and three hits with three walks and three strikeouts over four innings.
Schwanke (4-2) earned the win with six strikeouts and two walks over eight frames. John Hayes worked the ninth frame for the Shockerrs, allowing two walks and striking out three.
Five of Wichita State's six runs were unearned as Cal Poly committed four errors.
Second game of the series will be played Friday night at 4:35 p.m. PDT with sophomore southpaw Kyle Smith (3-1) on the mound for Cal Poly.
Final game of the series has been moved to a 9 a.m. PDT start on Saturday.
