BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal Poly beach volleyball team collected its first two victories of the season after a 3-2 win over San Jose State and 4-1 triumph over CSU Bakersfield on Friday afternoon at the Student Recreation Center's Barnes Beach. Friday's pair of victories also marks the first time in program history that the Mustangs have strung together successive wins after winning twice all of last season.
Cal Poly (2-4) shuffled its lineup prior to Friday's opener against the Spartans and the change paid off with a pair of road victories.
Cal Poly's new No. 2 pairing – sophomores Taylor Nelson and Savannah Niemen (pictured at right) – delivered the program's initial win from the second position this year with a 21-15, 21-14 win over SJSU's Tyanna Roy and Lyndi Scholl.
Against San Jose State, two more Cal Poly pairs collected the program's first victories in their respective positions this season, as the sophomore duo of Casey Carroll and Bailey Roach ousted SJSU's Giulia Gavio and Luiza Andrade in straight sets at No. 4, 21-15 and 22-20, while the Mustang freshman tandem of Dora Beilin and Katherine Brouker won a two-set decision over Julie Sam and Julia Golbeck, 21-10 and 21-17 from the fifth spot.
Against CSU Bakersfield, Cal Poly cobbled together four wins from the second-through-fifth positions, including the second win of the afternoon for Nelson and Niemen. The sophomore pair beat the Roadrunner duo of Edithza Urias and Jocelyn Rodriguez in straight sets, 21-16 and 21-14. Nelson and Niemen remained unbeaten (2-0) from the second position when partnered together this season.
Besides Nelson and Niemen, Cal Poly also witnessed two more pairs win their second matchup of the afternoon, as Beilin and Brouker ousted CSUB's Katie Dunbar-Lowe and Lisa Armedariz from the fifth position, 21-16 and 21-16, while Carroll and Roach outlasted the Roadrunner tandem of Sophie Flemion and Kelsee Sawyer in the fourth spot, 21-17, 16-21 and 17-15.
Cal Poly junior Anna Gorman and true freshman Jacqui Martin defeated CSUB's Kayla Tinker and Kortney Freeland from the third position in three sets, 21-13, 16-21 and 15-10 for the duo's second victory of the season.
On Friday, Cal Poly's sixth position of senior Megan Wagner and Clare Holehouse collected two victories (with neither counting toward the overall score) against San Jose State and CSU Bakersfield.
Cal Poly takes next week off for finals and returns to action in two weeks with a pair of matches scheduled for Friday, March 25 in Zuma Beach. The Mustangs are slated to face both No. 1 Pepperdine (10 a.m.) and Nebraska (11:15).
