MALIBU, Calif. – The Cal Poly beach volleyball team had its two-match win streak snapped on Friday after No. 1-ranked Pepperdine and Nebraska swept the Mustangs at Zuma Beach.
Against Pepperdine – who improved to an unblemished 10-0 this season – Cal Poly had no answer for the Waves, as the Mustang sophomore tandem of Taylor Nelson and Savannah Niemen came the closest to an upset, falling to Pepperdine's Heidi Dyer and Taylor Racich in two sets, 21-18 and 21-15.
Pepperdine clinched the match with a victory at No. 5 as Samantha Cash and Sarah Seiber defeated senior Megan Wagner and Clare Holehouse in successive sets, 21-7 and 21-10.
Cal Poly was unable to solve the Cornhuskers in the second match of the day, as Nebraska grabbed the early momentum with a two-set triumph from Annika Albrecht and Olivia Boender at the third position over junior Anna Gorman and freshman Jacqui Martin, 21-6 and 21-15.
Nelson and Niemen were able to force a third set (winning the first) against Nebraska's Kadie Rolfzen and Kelly Hunter from the first position before falling, 19-21, 21-15 and 15-9.
On Friday, Cal Poly matched up against Nebraska (defending indoor women's volleyball national champions) and former Mustang assistant coach Chris Tamas (who is now an assistant for both indoor and beach volleyball). Nebraska improved to 5-4 overall with the victory.
Cal Poly (2-6) continues its four-match road trip when visiting Concordia (10 a.m. PDT) and Irvine Valley College (11 a.m.) Saturday in Irvine, Calif.
