BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's basketball team pulled within five points on three occasions through the fourth quarter at CSU Bakersfield on New Year's Eve, but play was initially suspended with 3:27 remaining due to water dripping from the Icardo Center roof, and after a 30-minute delay, the game was not resumed.
The Roadrunners led 57-49 at the time of Saturday evening's stoppage with moisture on the court stemming from the rainstorm in the San Joaquin Valley.
The leak could not be fixed in the half-hour that ensued.
The WAC officials declared the game a 'no contest,' without a plan to resume the game. After Cal Poly had boarded the bus for San Luis Obispo, Coach Mimnaugh was informed by the officials that the WAC had declared CSUB the victor in the game, contradicting the earlier ruling by the officials. Cal Poly plans to appeal this ruling based on the poor communication and rain on the CSUB home court.
The Mustangs open Big West play hosting UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 in Mott Athletics Center. The upcoming Blue-Green Rivalry Game will also be Tote Bag Night, as free Cal Poly Mustang bags will be handed out to the first 500 fans.
Cal Poly's conference-opening home stand will continue against CSUN on Saturday, Jan. 7, tipping off at 4 p.m.
Senior forward Hannah Gilbert, who had a team-high 12 points Saturday through 36 minutes, cut the lead to single digits with 9:04 remaining, converting a Lynn Leaupepe pass for a layup to draw within 49-40.
Redshirt freshman guard Breezi Holt then scored on a layup from junior Kelly Wong with 8:25 left, before Gilbert scored down low on another Leaupepe assist at the 7:47 mark, closing the deficit to 49-44 while capping an 8-0 run that prompted a Roadrunner timeout.
Cal Poly would twice more pull within five points: on a Wong layup to make it 51-46 with 7:07 remaining and then on another Gilbert basket for a 53-48 margin with 5:49 left.
An Erika Williams layup gave CSU Bakersfield a 57-48 lead with 4:18 remaining in regulation before the stoppage commenced soon afterward following a Gilbert free throw.
