PALO ALTO, Calif. — Colt Shorts, Thomas Lane and Yoshito Funakoshi won their bouts but the Cal Poly wrestling team suffered its first loss of the 2016-17 season Saturday morning, falling 21-9 to No. 12 Stanford.
The Pac-12 dual meet was held outdoors, just the second to be held on The Farm, at Football Fan Fest prior to the Stanford football game versus Oregon State.
Shorts, the second Mustang on the mat, earned a 3-2 decision over Paul Fox at 157 pounds. The match was scoreless after two periods — Shorts riding out the second period — before Shorts earned an escape to start the final period. Fox scored a takedown but Shorts escaped again and won the match with his 1 minute, 32 seconds of riding time.
Lane was a 7-2 winner over Austin Flores at 184 pounds, pulling Cal Poly to within three points at 9-6. Lane scored an escape and takedown in the first period, duplicated the feat in the second period for a 6-2 lead and rode out the third period to compile 2:13 in riding time.
Stanford won the next three bouts for an 18-6 lead when Funakoshi (pictured above) broke the string with a 3-1 decision over Eric Cramer at 133. After a scoreless first period, Funakoshi rode out the second period and added a reversal and 3:22 in riding time for his three points and the win.
At 285, Mustang Spencer Empey and Nathan Butler battled to a 2-2 draw in regulation, but a takedown by Butler in overtime led to a 4-2 win for the Cardinal matman.
In another close match, Joshy Cortez fell 3-2 to Tommy Pawelski in the opening bout at 149 pounds. Pawelski earned an escape in the second period and a takedown in the third period and overcame two escapes by Cortez for the win.
All 10 bouts in the dual were decisions.
Cal Poly returns to the mat next Saturday with duals against Cal Baptist at noon and Northwestern at 2 p.m., both inside the Mott Athletics Center.
