Cal Poly Splits Saturday Dual Meets in Mott Athletics Center

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly split a pair of dual meets Saturday inside the Mott Athletics Center, defeating Cal Baptist 30-13 before falling to Northwestern 30-8.
Coach Jon Sioredas' Mustangs, now 3-2 on the year, wrap up a busy first two weeks of the 2016-17 wrestling season Sunday with a noon dual meet against No. 14 Rutgers, also in the Mott Athletics Center.
Against Cal Baptist, Cal Poly won the first seven bouts for a 30-0 lead before losing the final three.
Colton Schilling, Colt Shorts and Luke Wilson all won by fall for the Mustangs while the other four Cal Poly victories were by decision.
At 174, Travis Berridge needed overtime to outscore Nolan Kistler, 6-4. The two battled to a 4-4 draw before Berridge scored a takedown for the sudden-victory triumph.
Isaac Blackburn opened the dual meet with an 8-1 decision, Yoshito Funakoshi followed with an 8-4 triumph and, after Schilling's fall, Joshy Cortez held on for an 8-6 win.
Against Northwestern, Cal Poly won just two of the 10 bouts.
Schilling (pictured above) earned a 16-1 technical fall over Alexander McKenna at 141 pounds, narrowing the Wildcats' early lead to 9-5, and Blake Kastl at 165 was a 6-4 winner over Ben Sullivan, scoring a takedown in the final moments and earning enough riding time to overcome a 4-3 deficit.
Mustang 157-pounder Colt Shorts suffered his first loss of the year after four straight victories, dropping a 10-2 major decision to Bryce Brill.
