PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii — Four rounds between 72 and 74 were not good enough as the Cal Poly men's golf team slipped three spots into ninth place after the final round of play in the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on Tuesday at the Makai Golf Club at Princeville on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
After a 288 Sunday and 287 Monday, Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs posted a final-round 292 Tuesday for a three-over-par 867 total. Their ninth-place finish was the best among Big West schools in the 19-team field as Hawaii placed 17th and UC Irvine 19th.
Mississippi ran away with the team title. As the only school with three rounds below 280, Ole Miss posted a 33-under-par 831 total for a 22-stroke victory over Sam Houston State. Missouri was another seven shots back in third place.
Mustang senior Cole Nygren finished in a tie for 14th place with rounds of 68, 71 and 74 for a three-under-par 213 total. Justin De Los Santos, another senior, added rounds of 73, 71 and 72 for an even-par 216 and 22nd-place tie.
Other Mustang scorers were Jesse Yap (pictured above) with a final-round 73 for a 220 total and 41st-place tie; Grady Smith with a 73 as well for a 221 total and 46th-place tie; and Mitchell Martin with a 77 for a 228 total and 74th place.
Braden Thornberry of Mississippi, tied for 16th place after an opening-round 71, climbed all the way to the top with a 65 Monday and 67 Tuesday for a 13-under-par 203 total.
Thornberry finished three shots ahead of co-runners-up Andrew Ertel of Sam Houston State (73-64-69) and Mateusz Gradecki of East Tennessee State (65-70-71).
Two Mustangs competed as individuals. Court Lewis carded a final-round 70 for a 222 total and 52nd-place tie while Jordan Wright checked in with an 83 for a 251 total and 110th place.
Nygren finished fifth in par-3 scoring at even par while De Los Santos was minus-six on the par-5 holes for eighth place. There were 28 eagles in the tournament, none by a Mustang. Nygren posted 13 birdies for 10th place while Smith's 36 pars was good for 12th place.
