RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A goal just before halftime held up for the UC Riverside women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon, carrying the Highlanders to a 1-0 home win over Cal Poly.
Mustang senior Kendra Bonsall placed the first shot on goal for the day, forcing a save by Alanna Guzman three minutes in.
Cal Poly also earned a corner kick six minutes later, but the Highlanders — coming off a 3-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara — were able to come up with the clearance.
Freshman goalkeeper Sophia Brown denied Sammy Arellano in the fifth and seventh minutes, and also saved a shot by Blanca Barrio in the 33rd, but UCR broke through in the 45th minute.
Only 24 seconds before halftime, Barrio found Amanda Roy with a corner kick to the far post for the crucial goal with 18 seconds remaining to the break. (Barrio also had a goal and two assists against the Gauchos on Friday night.)
In the second half, Mustang sophomore Caitlyn Kreutz had a 63rd-minute shot blocked, before Brown saved a header by Tatum Lockett (70') to keep Cal Poly within striking distance of equalizing.
In the 81st minute, sophomore Stephanie Magellan sent a corner in to freshman Jordan Patane for a header, but Guzman was there for another stop, and the Highlanders (5-10-3, 2-5-0 Big West Conference) held on from there.
All but two of the Mustangs' defeats (6-10-2, 1-5-1) this season have been by a one-goal margin.
It was the 59th career start for Bonsall, who moved into a tie for the 20th-most in school history in the category.
Cal Poly will return home to host UC Davis (6-8-3, 2-3-1) for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 30. Before the 2 p.m. kickoff, the Mustangs will commemorate a class of nine graduating seniors in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
