
Cal Poly Jumps to Seventh-Place Tie in Bill Cullum Invitational

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's golf team carded a one-over-par four-person 289 Tuesday and jumped four spots into seventh place during the final round of the Bill Cullum Invitational at the Wood Ranch Golf Course.
Jesse Yap shot a final-round 70 on the 6,849-yard, par-72 course while Grady Smith (pictured at right) checked in with a 71 as Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs finished with a 54-hole 871 aggregate, sharing the seventh spot in the final team standings with Loyola Marymount.
UC Santa Barbara tied the tournament team record with a 31-under-par 833 total, matching the performance of USC in 2014. The Gauchos beat UC Irvine by 16 strokes and third-place Long Beach State by 20 strokes. There were 15 teams and 96 individuals in the field.
Individual champion was Jonah Texeira of USC, competing as an individual, with rounds of 66, 68 and 68 for a 14-under-par 202 total, besting the tournament record by one shot. Jon Rahm of Arizona State held the old mark of 203.
Fidel Concepcion of Southern Utah posted a final-round 69 to finish second at 12 under par and Brandon Bauman of UC Santa Barbara and David Kim of UC Irvine shared third place at 207.
Smith was Cal Poly's top finisher, placing in a tie for 25th with rounds of 71, 74 and 71 for an even-par 216 total. Yap and senior Justin De Los Santos finished tied for 38th place with 218 totals.
Also scoring for Cal Poly were Cole Nygren with a 73 Tuesday for a 220 total and a tie for 48th place, and Jordan Wright with a 75 for a 225 total and a tie for 66th place.
Two other Mustangs competed as individuals. Mitch Martin posted a 73 Tuesday for a one-under-par 215 total and a tie for 21st place while Court Lewis carded a 76 for a 217 total and a tie for 32nd place.
Yap and Lewis finished tied for ninth place in par-5 scoring at six under par. Nygren, Lewis and Yap all carded one eagle in the tournament while De Los Santos was second in the field with 15 birdies.
Cal Poly returns to action Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational at the Princeville Makai Golf Club in Princeville on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
