BEAUMONT, Calif. — Despite strong winds leading to higher scores, the men's team from Cal Poly's Swanson Golf Program climbed one spot to a fourth-place finish during the final round of play in the Winter Intercollegiate hosted by UC Riverside on Tuesday.
Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs, who posted rounds of 304 and 301 on Monday, carded a four-person 311 Tuesday for a 52-over-par 916 total, jumping over UC Irvine in the final standings.
UC Santa Barbara claimed the team title with an 896 total on the 7,078-yard, par-72 Oak Valley Golf Club course, finishing 14 strokes ahead of runner-up DePaul. Eastern Kentucky was third with a 914 total, two ahead of the Mustangs.
Mustang junior Justin De Los Santos (pictured above), the reigning Big West Conference individual champion, carded a final-round 76 for a 10-over-par 226 total and a tie for seventh place.
Teammate Jimmy Castles carded a 77 Tuesday for a 229 total and a tie for 12th place while Cam Price and Jesse Yap also finished in the top 20. Price recorded an 82 while Yap had a 76 as both finished with 232 totals and a 19th-place tie.
Nick Engelhardt was Cal Poly's fifth man and carded an 83 for a 240 total and 35th place.
Competing as an individual, Jordan Wright checked in with an 82 for a 237 total and 28th place.
Both individual champion Brandon Bauman and runner-up Zach Smith carded final-round 76s. Bauman finished at even par with his 216 total, two strokes ahead of his UC Santa Barbara teammate.
Jared Brown of Eastern Kentucky and Freddy Thomas of DePaul shared third place with 223 totals.
The high winds led to rock-hard greens, making approach shots difficult for the 10-team field of 54 golfers.
Cal Poly returns to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Father Higgins Classic hosted by Loyola Marymount at the Lake Las Vegas Golf Course in Las Vegas, Nevada.
