Two Cal Poly Pairs Win Third Straight, Mustangs Edged by Hornets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Playing its fourth match over the last three days, the Cal Poly sand volleyball team was outlasted by Sacramento State on Sunday morning, 4-3 in the final match of the Sacramento State Tournament. The Mustangs – who picked up their first win of the season on Saturday against Boise State – finished the tournament with a pair of 3-2 defeats.
Cal Poly's No. 4 junior pairing of Hannah Schleis and Katie Conroy swept all three of their matchups in Sacramento, including Sunday's straight-set (21-9, 21-16) decision over the Hornets' Lauren Kissell and Lauren Aikels. Schleis and Conroy improved their overall dual match record to 5-3 and have won five out their past six matchups this season.
Another Cal Poly duo – sophomores Taylor Gruenewald and Anna Gorman (both pictured) – continued their momentum from Saturday (two victories) with a two-set (21-17, 21-18) win over Lexie Skalbeck and Shannon Boyle in the third position. Gruenewald and Gorman have won five times when paired together this season, including three consecutive this weekend.
Sacramento State grabbed the other three matchups on Sunday, including a straight-set (21-19, 21-12) from Sloan Lovett and Kayla Beal at No. 1 over Cal Poly's Raeann Greisen and Taylor Nelson. The Hornet tandem of Morgan Stanley and Madeline Cannon ousted junior Nicole Kessler and freshman Caihla Petiprin in two sets (21-11, 21-18), while Kennedy Kurtz and Hannah Meadows defeated the Mustang duo of freshman Casey Carroll and sophomore Shannon Fouts (21-14, 21-9).
Cal Poly completes its season with three matches in two days at the Stanford Invitational next weekend, including the first matchup at 3 p.m. Friday, April 10 versus Washington.
