Cal Poly Ousted by Washington in Stanford Invitational Opener

STANFORD, Calif. –During the opening round of the Stanford Invitational on Friday afternoon, the Cal Poly sand volleyball team was defeated, 4-1 by Washington at Stadium Courts. The Mustang pairing of sophomores Taylor Gruenewald and Anna Gorman (both pictured) won their sixth matchup of the season – and fourth straight – after a three-set comeback (11-21, 21-18, 15-9) victory over Carly DeHoog and Krista Vansant in the third position.
The Mustangs managed near comebacks during three matchups, as the freshman combination of Raeann Greisen and Taylor Nelson fell to UW's Kaleigh Nelson and Cassie Strickland during a three-set loss (13-21, 21-18, 11-15) in the first position and the Cal Poly pairing of freshman Casey Carroll and sophomore Shannon Fouts were ousted in three (18-21, 21-12, 7-15) by Justice Magraw and Melanie Wade.
Cal Poly's duo of junior Hannah Schleis and sophomore Katie Conroy had their three-match winning streak ended during a three-set loss (14-21, 21-15, 11-15) to the Husky pairing Courtney Schwan and Bailey Tanner.
Washington's Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray ousted junior Nicole Kessler and freshman Caihla Petiprin in two sets (21-11, 21-15) for the final Husky point. The Cal Poly freshman tandem of Bailey Roach and Savannah Niemen defeated Jade Finau and Lianna Sybeldon in two sets (21-11, 21-16) during the exhibition match in the sixth position.
Cal Poly wraps up its season with two matches on Saturday, beginning with a noon battle against Oregon at the Arillaga Center for Sports and at 3 p.m. against Stanford at Stadium Courts. All events this weekend at Cardinalpalooza (click HERE) are free.
