
Martin's Third-Place Finish Lifts Cal Poly to Sixth Place in El Macero Classic

EL MACERO, Calif. – Sophomore Mitch Martin's third-place finish lifted the Cal Poly men's golf team to sixth place after the final round of the El Macero Classic hosted by UC Davis on Sunday at the El Macero Country Club.
Martin (pictured at right), an Arroyo Grande High School graduate who posted a 69 Saturday, carded a final-round even-par 72 to finish with a one-under-par 215 total for 54 holes.
Junior Cam Price added a 74 for a 223 total and a tie for 20th place while sophomore Justin De Los Santos recorded a 74 as well for a 224 total and a 24th-place tie.
The trio of top-25 finishers enabled Cal Poly to move up one more spot into sixth place, posting a 298 total Sunday for a 54-hole, four-person 890 aggregate.
UC Davis won the three-day event with a one-over-par 865 total, 10 strokes better than Marquette and Sacramento State. There were nine teams in the tournament.
Other Mustang scoring golfers were Jimmy Castles with a 78 for a 235 total and 49th place, and Johnny Caastles with an 85 for a 236 total and 50th place.
Individual champion was Luke Vivolo of UC Davis with a final-round 73 and a 10-under-par 206 total, eight shots ahead of runner-up Taylor Knoll of Sacramento State.
Martin was another shot back in third place, with Brayden Eriksen of Utah Valley fourth and Mustang freshman Jesse Yap, competing as an individual, finishing tied for fifth with Jooho Lee of Nevada. Yap had rounds of 71, 72 and 74 for a one-over-par 217 total.
Price was two over par on the par-3 holes while Yap and Martin both finished two under par on the par-4 holes. Martin also played the par-five holes three under par.
Martin was third in the field with his 13 birdies while Yap was fourth with 11. De Los Santos posted 37 pars, tied with three other golfers for third place.
Cal Poly will host the Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship on April 26-28 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
