Cal Poly Ousted by CSUN, Bakersfield in Season Opener

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal Poly sand volleyball team kicked off its second season on Saturday afternoon, losing dual matches to CSUN, 4-1 and host CSU Bakersfield, 3-2 at the Student Recreation Center Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex.
The sophomore combination of Taylor Gruenewald (pictured) and Anna Gorman won both of their matches on Saturday, including 21-13, 21-12 against CSUN's Cieana Stinson and Stephanie Serna that prevented the Mustangs from being swept. The pair also dispatched CSUB's Hazel Perrens and Kelsee Sawyer 21-19, 21-13 at the No. 4 doubles position.
Against Bakersfield, Cal Poly junior Nicole Kessler and freshman Caihla Petiprin combined for a 21-12, 22-20 victory over Danika Youngblood and Sydney Haynes at the No. 4 position.
The freshman duo of Taylor Nelson and Raeann Greisen forced a third set in both of their matches at No. 1 doubles, falling to CSUN's Casey Hinger and Kelcie Randazzo, 16-21, 21-17, 14-16. Against the Roadrunners, Nelson and Greisen took the second set, 21-16 against Mariah Alvidrez and Molly O'Hagan, but lost the bookend sets, 20-22 and 9-15.
Cal Poly (0-2) hosts the first home sand volleyball match in program history at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14 and 9 a.m. Sunday versus Arizona in Pismo Beach. Against the Wildcats, Saturday is a scheduled team dual competition and Sunday's action will feature a pair's tournament.
