CORVALLIS, OR – No. 19 Oregon State scored twice in the fifth inning to overcome a 2-1 deficit and held on to defeat Cal Poly 4-2 in the final game of a three-game non-conference baseball series Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
Cal Poly, which won the first two games of the series by 8-1 and 7-2 scores, returns to San Luis Obispo with a 9-15 overall mark. Oregon State improves to 21-7.
A double, a walk and a sacrifice bunt placed Oregon State runners at second and third with one out in the fifth. Catcher Logan Ice's sacrifice fly to left field tied the game at 2-2 and third baseman Michael Gretler singled to break the deadlock.
The Beavers added an insurance run in the eighth inning on four walks.
Cal Poly produced a two-out single in the sixth, was retired in order in the seventh, couldn't take advantage of a pair of walks in the eighth and went down in order in the ninth.
Junior right-hander Travis Eckert (3-0) pitched six innings for the win, allowing two runs and six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Mitch Hickey earned his fourth save with one strikeout in a perfect ninth inning.
The loss went to Mustang freshman right-hander Michael Gomez (0-2), who relieved starter Andrew Bernstein after a leadoff double by shortstop Trever Morrison. Gomez gave up a walk to left fielder Kyle Nobach and he eventually scored what proved to be the winning run.
Bernstein retired the first nine Oregon State batters of the game but gave up single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on three hits. Gomez allowed one run and two hits in three innings of work on the mound.
Cal Poly's six hits included two singles by junior first baseman Brian Mundell (pictured above). Oregon State collected five hits by five different batters.
Oregon State took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as second baseman Christian Donohue singled, moved to second on a comebacker and scored on a single by first baseman KJ Morrison.
Cal Poly answered with a pair of runs in the fifth. Senior third baseman Tommy Pluschkell drew a one-out walk and junior second baseman Ryan Drobny singled. Another out later, junior shortstop Peter Van Gansen and Mundell both singled to knock in the runs.
Cal Poly will play four more games on the road next week, visiting Pepperdine on Tuesday and opening defense of its Big West Conference championship Thursday night at Cal State Fullerton.
