CORVALLIS, OR – Junior first baseman Brian Mundell and senior left fielder Zack Zehner both knocked in three runs and senior right-hander Danny Zandona earned his fourth save as Cal Poly clinched its three-game non-conference baseball series at No. 19 Oregon State with a 7-2 victory Saturday afternoon in Goss Stadium.
Mundell produced a sacrifice fly and two-run single for his three RBI while Zehner (pictured at right) drew a bases-loaded walk and a two-run home run for his trio of RBI as Cal Poly improved to 9-14 for the season. Oregon State fell to 20-7.
Mustang freshman southpaw Kyle Smith (2-4) pitched five scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth but earned his second win of the year, scattering six hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Freshman right-hander Michael Gomez secured four outs, two via strikeout, and Zandona tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts for his fourth save.
The loss went to Oregon State freshman right-hander Drew Rasmussen (3-1) as he gave up four runs and six hits in 7 1/3 innings with four walks and two strikeouts. A week earlier, Rasmussen pitched a perfect game against Washington State.
Cal Poly scored in the opening inning as junior designated hitter Mark Mathias singled, took third on a single by junior shortstop Peter Van Gansen and came home on a sacrifice fly by Mundell.
The Mustangs stretched their advantage to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the sixth. After a single and two walks loaded the bases with one out, Zehner drew a walk to force in the first run and junior right fielder John Schuknecht's sacrifice fly knocked in the second run.
Oregon State closed the gap to 3-1 with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Left fielder Michael Howard singled to knock in the run in the sixth and first baseman KJ Harrison singled to drive in the seventh-inning run.
Zehner restored Cal Poly's three-run cushion with his fifth home run of the season and second of the series, a two-run shot down the left-field line in the eighth. Zehner leads the club in home runs and in RBIs with 23.
Mundell's two-run single with the bases loaded in the ninth gave Cal Poly two more insurance runs.
Mathias, Mundell and senior center fielder Jordan Ellis each had two of Cal Poly's 11 hits. Oregon State's nine hits, all singles, included two each by Harrison and right fielder Joe Gillette.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with freshman right-hander Andrew Bernstein (3-2, 3.08 ERA) of Cal Poly to face Oregon State junior right-hander Travis Eckert (2-0, 2.77 ERA).
