
UC Irvine Defeats Cal Poly to Claim Match Play Championship

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — Top-seeded UC Irvine defeated third-seeded Cal Poly 4 and 1 to claim the 2015 Cal Poly Collegiate Match Play Championship on Tuesday at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course.
Cal Poly's lone winner in the title match was No. 5 Court Lewis (pictured at right) with a 4 and 3 victory over Jonathan Young. Mustang No. 2 Justin De Los Santos extended Bryan Shin into a playoff before falling on the second hole.
Mustangs Cam Price and Mitch Martin both dropped 1-up decisions.
Cal Poly defeated Weber State and CSU Bakersfield on Monday to advance to the championship final while UC Irvine earned wins over Cal Poly's "B" team and UC Santa Barbara.
UC Santa Barbara claimed third place with a 4 and 1 win over CSU Bakersfield while Weber State beat the Mustang "B" squad 3.5 to 1.5 for the consolation title. Utah State placed seventh with a 4 and 1 win over Hawai'i.
Jesse Yap won his match 2 and 1 over Luke Crapo while Adam Yount halved his matched with Michael Johnson for the Mustang "B" team.
Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs will compete in the El Macero Classic hosted by UC Davis on April 10-12.
