San Jose State Parlays Four Unearned Runs Into 5-2 Victory Over Cal Poly

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose State took advantage of a two-out error, scoring four unearned runs in the second inning, and the Spartans made them stand up for a 5-2 victory over Cal Poly in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night in Municipal Stadium.

After Kyle Morrison reached on the infield error, a line drive off the glove of Mustang third baseman Tommy Pluschkell allowing the first run to score, Andre Mercurio tripled into the right-field corner to drive in three runs.

Cal Poly answered with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, but could get no closer in falling to 4-9 on the year. San Jose State, which added an insurance run in the eighth, snapped a four-game losing streak against the Mustangs and improved to 6-10.

Senior right fielder Zack Zehner singled to knock in the fourth-inning run for Cal Poly and pinch hitter Kevin Morgan drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the second Mustang run in the sixth.

Junior designated hitter Mark Mathias doubled with two outs in the seventh and junior first baseman John Schuknecht doubled with one out in the ninth but Cal Poly couldn't cash in.

Freshman right-hander Jarred Zill (0-1) was the hard-luck loser, giving up four unearned runs and four hits in three-plus innings. Sophomore right-hander Slater Lee pitched one scoreless inning, sophomore right-hander Nick Suniga (pictured above) scattered three hits over three scoreless frames and senior southpaw Taylor Chris allowed a run in the eighth inning.

The win was earned by San Jose State starter Horatio Tovar (1-0), who retired all nine Mustangs he faced in three scoreless, hitless innings, striking out three.

Cal Poly's six hits included a single and double by Mathias. Junior first baseman John Schuknecht added a double.

Cal Poly opens an eight-game home stand Thursday night, hosting Sacramento State (8-6) for the first of four games, starting at 6 p.m.
