
Kastl Places Second at 174 Pounds, Qualifies for Nationals

CORVALLIS, Oregon – Cal Poly senior Dominic Kastl finished second at 174 pounds in the Pac-12 Championship held Sunday in Oregon State's Gill Coliseum.
Kastl (pictured at right), the Pac-12 champion at 165 pounds in 2012, will be the lone Mustang in the NCAA Division I National Championship, scheduled for March 19-21 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, MO.
After a first-round bye, Kastl pinned Holden Packard of Boise State in 4 minutes, 56 seconds, before he dropped a 9-4 decision to Joe Latham of Oregon State in the finals. He will take a 16-6 record to the nationals.
Mustang 157-pounder Colt Shorts placed fourth, dropping a 2-1 sudden victory decision to Oliver Pierce of Arizona State in the consolation finals. Top three wrestlers at 157 pounds qualified for the nationals.
Nicolas Johnson placed fourth at 285 pounds.
Travis Berridge (165), J.T. Goodwin (197), Nick Fiegener (184), Yoshito Funakoshi (125) and Blake Kastl (149) all earned fifth-place finishes for Cal Poly. Jason DelaCruz (133) and Colton Schilling (141) took sixth.
Oregon State claimed its fourth straight Pac-12 team title, claiming five individual titles, three seconds and two thirds. Cal Poly placed sixth.
