Cal Poly Secures Five Event Wins, Falls to San Diego State

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's swimming program collected five event victories during a 161-108 defeat to San Diego State last Friday at Anderson Aquatic Center. Sophomore Lauren Pierce recorded a pair of individual wins on the 1-meter and 3-meter diving board for the Mustangs, who slipped to 1-2 overall in dual meets this season.
Pierce (pictured at right) delivered two triumphs over SDSU's Payton Gabris, including a 1-meter score of 263.75-243.75 and 3-meter score of 277.20-216.37. The 277.20 mark on the 3-meter board was only 1.80 points from equaling a career-high, which Pierce set back on Nov. 7 against Pepperdine.
Cal Poly sophomore Sage Speak won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.89, which was a full four seconds ahead of the next closest competitor. Speak is coming off two Olympic Trial qualifications at the AT&T Winter National Championships a few weeks ago in both the 100 and 200-meter breaststrokes.
Sophomore Bonnie Diamond raced to a win in the 500-yard freestyle after her 5:03.52 finish and freshman Meghan Merlihan secured a victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a mark of 10:24.57 for Cal Poly.
Several Mustangs earned second place finishes on Friday, which included Diamond in the 200-yard free (1:52.24 – only nine tenths of a second behind SDSU's Whitney Weisz), senior Allison de Peralta in the 100 back (58.19), Speak in the 100 breast (1:05.04), senior Taylor Guy in the 100 fly (57.95) and senior Belen Enguidanos in the 200 fly (2:04.22).
For the Aztecs, Weisz collected a pair of event wins, including 100 free (52.02), while SDSU freshman Rachael Kelch recorded victories in both the 200 fly (2:03.26) and 200 IM (2:06.48). SDSU improved to 5-1 in dual meets this season.
Cal Poly takes the rest of the calendar year off and returns to action Saturday, Jan. 9 for a men's and women's dual meet at Pacific. For a complete schedule of results and upcoming events, click HERE.
