SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Playing on the road for the fifth time in six games, the Cal Poly women's soccer team fell 4-0 at UC Santa Barbara on Thursday night in Harder Stadium, where the Gauchos earned their second victory over the Mustangs since 2008.
It was the first game since 2013 in which the Mustangs were scored upon more than twice.
UCSB got on the board in the 13th minute, when Kate Shoemaker headed in a Dakota Griggs corner kick delivered to the far post.
Cal Poly sophomore Emily Hansen placed a shot on goal in the 26th minute, before again testing Beth Ritter in the 31st.
Mustang senior forward Elise Krieghoff also forced saves on 32' and 68'.
Six minutes into the second half, freshman Caitlyn Kreutz fired on target, as did sophomore McKenzie Flood in the 56th.
The Gauchos went up 2-0 on another header 22 minutes from full time, as Mallory Hromatko put away a cross from Savannah Francis. They added another in the 76th minute, thanks to Jessica Parque shooting into an empty net off a short pass from Hannah Dearborn, before completing the scoring in the 79th, lastly with Parque reciprocating the service for Dearborn.
Alyssa Giannetti made saves in the 30th, 48th and 80th minutes for Cal Poly, which had come into the match with a 23-16 goals differential for the season.
The Mustangs are set to return home to take on UC Irvine at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, for Break the Attendance Record Night in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Cal Poly will attempt that evening to surpass the national record for single-game NCAA regular-season women's soccer attendance: 10,128 (set at last year's USC-UCLA game in the L.A. Memorial Coliseum). Spanos Stadium seats 11,075.
The event will coincide with the campus' Alumni & Parents and Homecoming festivities, part of the new Mustang Family Weekend.
