SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal Poly men's golf team finished 11th in the season-opening Saint Mary's Invitational on Tuesday at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course on the Monterey Peninsula.
Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs finished with a four-person, 54-hole 33-over-par 897 total on the 7,104-yard, par-72 course after posting a final-round 297. Cal Poly finished just three strokes out of the top 10 in the 16-team field.
Top finisher for the Mustangs was sophomore Mitch Martin (pictured at right) as the Arroyo Grande High School graduate carded a final-round 71 for a 54-hole one-over-par 217 total, placing 13th.

Second-round leader Mathias Dahl of San Diego matched par with a 72 Tuesday and it was enough to hold off the rest of the field as he beat Jobim Carlos of San Francisco by one stroke. Dahl had a 54-hole seven-under-par 209 total, Carlos finished at 210 and Matt Lee of Pacific was third at 211.
San Diego claimed the team title with an even-par 864 total, followed by Saint Mary's at 865 and San Francisco at 871.
Cal Poly led the field in the final round with a 2.95 average on the par-3 holes, but was sixth in par-4 scoring (4.32) and 13th in par-5 scoring (4.95). The Mustangs' 15 birdies were second-most in the two-day tournament while their 50 pars ranked No. 7.
Martin and Wright topped all golfers with a 2.50 average on the par-3 holes in the final round. Martin's five birdies were second-best.
