STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State snapped a 1-1 tie with a penalty kick midway through the second half as the Cowgirls posted a 2-1 victory over Cal Poly in a non-conference women's soccer match Friday night.
Oklahoma State scored the lone goal of the first half in the 21st minute, as Allie Stephenson took a pass from Miriam Rhinehart and drilled a 12-foot shot to the far post.
Cal Poly answered in the 63rd minute. Elise Krieghoff was fouled just outside the 18-yard box. Her free kick caromed off the Oklahoma State wall and rolled back to her.
She then blasted a deep shot that hit the crossbar and rolled to the feet of Megan Abutin, who tapped in the rebound to tie the match at 1-1.
Less than 10 minutes later, Madison Mercado was tripped up in the box by a Cal Poly defender and Stephenson converted the penalty kick to give the Cowgirls the lead for good.
Cal Poly produced twice as many shots on goal, 8-4, but the Mustangs were whistled for 22 fouls, 10 more than Oklahoma State. Krieghoff recorded four shots on goal and Abutin had a pair.
Mustang goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti made two saves while Rosa Medina was credited with seven saves for the Cowgirls.
Cal Poly concludes its four-match road trip Sunday with a 10 a.m. (PDT) match at Oral Roberts.
