MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's soccer team scored early and then added another goal just ahead of the half on Friday before holding on for a 2-1 season-opening home win against Cal Poly at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
A little more than three-and-a-half minutes in, Hailey Harbison put away a header from the left side on a throw-in from her older sister, Meagan Harbison.
The first chance for the Mustangs was cleared in the seventh minute, but Elise Krieghoff also placed shots on goal in the 18th and 29th minutes.
The Waves went up 2-0 in the 41st when Meagan Harbison blasted a rebound of a header stemming from a Colby Carson corner kick.
In the second half, Cal Poly again threatened with shots from Emily Orwig (a 47th-minute blocked header), Krieghoff (59', saved) and Sara Epps (76', sailing just over the bar).
The Mustangs broke through in the 85th minute, when Breanna Rittmann crossed in from the left, nearly squarely to the center of the 18-yard box. Allie Bégin, who had come on in the 63rd, took advantage with a perfectly delivered header from about 8 yards out.
It was the second career goal for the junior outside back (shown at right).
Pepperdine was able to play keepaway in the closing minutes.
Cal Poly stayed within striking distance throughout the day thanks to some excellent work in goal by Alyssa Giannetti, who made seven saves, including two just 50 seconds apart during one possession in the opening half.
In the process, the junior passed Coral Hoover (2006-09) to move into third all-time in school history, now with 214 saves — 26 back of the No. 2 keeper in the category, Natalia Garcia (1996-2000).
The Mustangs will host their home opener at noon Sunday in Alex G. Spanos Stadium, versus Lamar. (The Lady Cardinals were 1-0 winners in their first game, at San Jose State.)
