STOCKTON – The Cal Poly sand volleyball program closed the program's opening week of action on a down note as the Mustangs dropped a 4-1 decision to Pacific at Raney Family Courts on Sunday afternoon.
Cal Poly's lone victory of Sunday came at the No. 5 position as the freshman pairing of Shannon Fouts and Taylor Gruenewald (right) rolled past Pacific's Jessica Diederich and Francesca Zaragoza, 21-10, 21-11.
The victory by Fouts and Gruenewald, however, marked Cal Poly's only set wins of the day. At the No. 1 position, senior Jennifer Keddy and sophomore Katie Conroy were edged by Pacific's Lexi Elman and Kat Schulz (21-18, 21-18) and, at No. 2, junior Megan Groess and sophomore Nicole Kessler were outdueled by Alicja Wilk and Kimmy Whitson (21-9, 21-15).
At the No. 3 spot, Cal Poly senior Kate Walters and sophomore Hannah Schleis dropped a 21-9, 21-15 decision to Mia Feiner and Gillian Howard. Pacific wrapped up the match at No. 4 with Katy Tagart and Megan Birch besting Cal Poly junior Stacia Williams and freshman Anna Gorman.
The Mustangs (1-4) return to the sand when visiting No. 9 Saint Mary's in a 4 p.m. matchup on Friday, April 11.
