Mustangs Swept Twice to Close Sacramento State Invitational

SACRAMENTO – A day after prevailing in the first sand volleyball match in school history, Cal Poly produced just one set victory on Saturday as the Mustangs closed the Sacramento State Invitational with successive 5-0 losses against No. 9 Saint Mary's and San Francisco.
During Saturday's morning session against the nation's ninth-ranked program, Cal Poly (1-3) captured its only set win against Saint Mary's with junior Stacia Williams and freshman Anna Gorman edged at the No. 4 spot by Rachel Gillcrist and Mileva Popovic, 19-21, 21-15, 15-13.
In the other four matchups versus Saint Mary's, Mustang senior Jennifer Keddy and sophomore Katie Conroy fell at the No. 1 position to Jordan Shaw and Samantha Tinsley (21-11, 21-14) while, at No. 2, junior Megan Groess and sophomore Nicole Kessler (right) dropped another two-set match to Kristina Graven and Natalie Loos (21-11, 23-21). At No. 3, senior Kate Walters and sophomore Hannah Schleis were on the downside to Dalas Dodd and Alexis Salmons (21-10, 21-17) and, at No. 5, freshmen Shannon Fouts and Taylor Gruenewald fell by identical scores to Maegan Conroy and Popovic (21-16, 21-16).
During Saturday's evening matchup versus San Francisco, Keddy and Conroy fell at No. 1 to Valentina Zaloznik and Sara Staengle (21-13, 21-10), Kessler and Groess were topped at No. 2 by Jurja Vlasic and Malina Terrell (21-17, 21-10), Walters and Schleis were bested at No. 3 by Katarina Pilepic and Courtney Sabahi (21-9, 21-17), Williams and Gorman were edged at No. 4 by Becky Kopilovitch and Anja Segota (21-19, 21-15) and Fouts and Gruenewald were on the downside at No. 5 against Emily Reed and Invar Vinarsky (21-11, 21-18).
Cal Poly concludes the program's opening week with a 12 noon match at Pacific on Sunday, April 6.
