SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Arizona State overcame 9-0 and 12-6 deficits with wins in five of the final six bouts en route to a 24-15 victory over Cal Poly in a Pac-12 Conference dual meet Friday night in the Mott Athletics Center.
Prior to the dual meet, Cal Poly's four seniors – Britain Longmire, Kyle Chene, Sean Dougherty and Brandan Rocha – were honored. At intermission of the Homecoming match, the Mustangs' 1973-74 wrestling team was honored on its 40th anniversary of Cal Poly's eighth NCAA Division II national championship.
Longmire earned a 5-2 decision at 125 pounds and Chene (pictured at right) was a 4-2 winner at 149 to help Cal Poly to its early 12-6 advantage. In between, Mustang sophomore Devon Lotito won by fall over Kalin Goodsite in just 1 minute, 13 seconds. It was Lotito's 20th win of the season and fifth by a pin.
But Cal Poly could win just one of the remaining six bouts as freshman Nicolas Johnson earned a 5-3 decision over Wesley Moore at 197 pounds.
Arizona State, now 8-7 on the year and 3-1 in Pac-12 duals, collected one fall and three major decisions en route to the victory.
Cal Poly fell to 3-9 and 1-4.
Coach Brendan Buckley's Mustangs prepare for the Pac-12 Championships, slated for Sunday, March 2, at Stanford.
