
Chene Captures Title at 149 Pounds; Two Other Mustangs Place

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Cal Poly senior Kyle Chene captured top honors at 149 pounds and two other Mustang wrestlers were placewinners in the California Collegiate Open on Saturday at San Francisco State.
Chene (pictured at right) reached the finals with a 5-2 decision and 16-5 and 9-1 major decisions, then defeated AJ Fierro of Bakersfield 9-5 for the title.
Mustang 157-pounder Luke McDonald placed second, winning four of five matches.
McDonald pinned his first opponent in 3 minutes, 51 seconds, then earned 11-6, 5-0 and 5-2 decisions to reach the finals, where he fell 11-3 to Garrett Schaner of Stanford.
Colton Schilling placed fourth at 141 pounds with a 5-2 record.
Schilling won his first match 10-0 and pinned his second foe in 1:51 before losing in the quarterfinals 8-1. In the wrestlebacks, Schilling earned a 9-8 decision, a fall in 2:15 and a win by injury default before he fell 3-0 to Joey Delgado of Oregon State in the match for third and fourth place.
Cal Poly hosts South Dakota State at 1 p.m. and Stanford at 5 p.m., both dual meets next Sunday (Feb. 9) in the Mott Athletics Center. South Dakota State and Stanford will meet at 3 p.m.
