Fiegener, Trujillo Place in 20th Reno Tournament of Champions

RENO, Nevada — Nick Fiegener placed fourth at 184 pounds while Victor Trujillo finished sixth at 133 pounds, highlighting Cal Poly's performance in the 20th annual Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday at the Reno Events Center.
Fiegener (pictured at right) won his first three matches by major decision, default and fall before he was pinned in the semifinals by Taylor Meeks of Oregon State. He finished the single-day tournament with a 4-2 record and the true freshman from Folsom is now 14-10 on the year.
Trujillo earned a pair of decisions before he was pinned in the quarterfinals by Jake Rauser of Utah Valley. The sophomore from Rio Linda lost by major decision and fall in the consolation bracket.
At 157 pounds, sophomore Colt Shorts won four of six matches. He lost his first match by a 4-2 decision, then won four consecutive matches in the consolation bracket, falling one win shy of placing. Shorts is 12-9 for the season.
Nicolas Johnson also posted a 4-2 mark at 285 pounds. Following the same path as Shorts, Johnson lost his opening match by a 3-2 decision, then won four consolation matches, all by decision, before he was bumped out by a 3-2 decision against Dustin Dennison of Utah Valley, also finishing one win short of placement. Johnson is 11-10 for the year.
Earning a 3-2 mark at 141 pounds was Colton Schilling, improving his mark to 13-6 for the season, while Isaac Blackburn (125 pounds), Joe Granger (157), Travis Berridge (165) and Dominic Kastl (174) all went 2-2 on the day.
Wyoming claimed the team title with 134 points, while Stanford and Oregon State shared second place with 102.5 points. Cal Poly finished 13th in the 19-team field with 39 points.
Cal Poly takes the next two weeks off for the holidays, returning to the mat Jan. 9 and 10 with dual meets against Wyoming and Brown, both in the Mott Athletics Center at 7 and 1 p.m. respectively.
