SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Four players scored in double figures for the Cal Poly women's basketball team on Tuesday night as the Mustangs pulled away from Santa Clara for a 79-73 win in The Leavey Center.
Ariana Elegado made all 12 of her free throws and finished with a game-high 16 points. Her perfect-dozen performance from the line broke a school record that had stood for 31 years for most makes without a miss (Terrie MacDonald went 10-for-10 in a 1983 game).
Perhaps the play of the game came from another senior guard, Kristen Ale, who made a crucial 3-pointer with 3:01 remaining, plus the free throw after a foul to complete a 4-point play, making it 71-61.
Although the Broncos (3-2) – who were coming off a 69-67 win over LSU – cut the lead to 73-69 with 1:35 to play, the Mustangs (4-3) held them scoreless on the ensuing three possessions down the stretch, sinking 6 of 8 free throws the rest of the way to seal it.
Dynn Leaupepe equaled her season high, finishing with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting, and pulled down seven rebounds. The true freshman also had three steals. Her twin sister Lynn also added 10 points and nine boards.
Ale finished with 11 points and also had three steals.
Santa Clara led 30-24 with 2:40 to play before the break, but Cal Poly went on a 13-2 run to go to halftime up 37-32.
Cal Poly accumulated a 32-24 advantage in the paint throughout. The Mustangs also continued to get strong production off the bench, outscoring the SCU backups 36-29 (the sixth time through seven games that has happened).
The Mustangs will return home to host Saint Mary's at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14 in Mott Athletics Center.
