SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Behind a 29-point, 11-rebound performance from junior forward Lakin Roland, the Dartmouth women's basketball team overcame a 16-0 second-half Cal Poly run to win its first game at the eighth annual ShareSLO Holiday Tournament on Friday night, 74-61.
The Big Green (3-0) got out to an 11-2 lead three minutes in, on the way to remaining undefeated. While an Ariana Elegado jumper brought the Mustangs to within 15-12 at the 9:08 mark, Dartmouth pulled away to head to the locker room up 31-16, thanks largely to 59.1-percent shooting at the time.
After the visitors kept the momentum going for the first three-and-a-half minutes out of the break to take their largest lead of the evening at 43-18, Cal Poly (2-3) scored 16 unanswered points (the team's longest contiguous run of the young season so far) over the ensuing four minutes to make it 43-34.
Dartmouth recovered, though, as Roland — who put in 27 of her points after intermission — halted the surge with a 3.
A long-range bomb by Elegado with 6:18 remaining cut the deficit to 54-44, but the Big Green didn't allow it to get any closer after that, and finished 25 of 45 altogether.
The loss came despite a 32-20 Mustang advantage in the paint.
Elegado and fellow senior guard Kristen Ale (shown at right) both had 18 points, and freshman Lynn Leaupepe added 10.
Cal Poly will host Day 2 of the tournament starting at 3 p.m. Saturday (with Kent State vs. Dartmouth), before the Mustangs return at 5 p.m. to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (a 57-47 winner over the Golden Flashes earlier in the afternoon). Admission is free to all.
