Shorts Places Second at 157 Pounds in Season-Opening Clarion Open

CLARION, Penn. — Sophomore Colt Shorts placed second at 157 pounds, highlighting Cal Poly's performance at the season-opening Clarion Open on Sunday in W.S. Tippin Gym.
Returning to his home state, Shorts, a graduate of Canon-McMillan High School in Canonsburg, Penn., won his first four matches to reach the championship final, where he dropped a 9-0 decision to top-seeded Austin Matthews of Edinboro.
Shorts (pictured at right) earned a decision, a major decision, a technical fall and a pin en route to the final round.
Cal Poly sent five wrestlers to the Clarion Open.
Blake Kastl at 149 pounds posted a 4-2 mark while Yoshito Funakoshi at 125 pounds and Nick Fiegener at 184 each won three of five matches. J.T. Goodwin went 1-2 at 197 pounds.
Several other Mustangs competed in the San Francisco State Under-21 Open on Sunday in Gator Gym.
Travis Berridge placed first at 165 pounds with a 4-0 record, posting a pair of decisions, a technical fall and a pin.
Other top Cal Poly performers were Jason DelaCruz with a second-place finish at 133 pounds, Johnny Beltran with a third-place finish at 184 pounds, Nick Johnson with a third-place finish at 285 pounds, Colton Schilling with a fourth-place finish at 141 pounds and Joe Granger with a fourth-place finish at 157 pounds.
Cal Poly will host San Francisco State and Cal Baptist for dual meets Saturday in the Mott Athletics Center, beginning at 2 p.m.
