
Trio of Mustangs Place in Roadrunner Open

FRESNO, Calif. — A trio of Cal Poly wrestlers earned top-six finishes in the Roadrunner Open hosted by Cal State Bakersfield in Fresno's Selland Arena on Sunday.
Mustang 125-pounder Yoshito Funakoshi placed fourth, as did Nick Fiegener at 184 pounds while Travis Berridge placed fifth at 165 pounds.
Funakoshi (pictured at right) reached the quarterfinals with a pair of decisions, then lost by an 11-1 major decision to Dominic Parisi of Appalachian State. In the consolation bracket, the Mustang freshman posted two more decisions and won by medical forfeit before he was pinned by Parisi in 2 minutes, 44 seconds, in the final round.
Fiegener won his first three matches by decision to reach the semifinal round, then was defeated by Taylor Meeks of Oregon State in a 10-0 major decision. Fiegener then won by a 5-3 decision against Garet Krohn of Stanford to reach the final round, where he fell 6-0 to Corey Griego, wrestling unattached.
Berridge also won his first three matches by decision to gain a spot in the semifinals, where he was pinned by Jackson Morse of Iowa in 1:10. In the consolation bracket, Berridge dropped an 11-5 decision to Nick Kee of Appalachian State, then earned a wild 17-14 decision over Ethan Ramos of North Carolina for fifth place.
Cal Poly will host the first of two outdoor dual meets Friday afternoon, wrestling Northern Colorado at 3 p.m. in the University Union plaza.
