
Cal Poly Cross Country Teams Finish as Runner-Ups at Championships

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Cal Poly cross country teams both finished second at the Big West Conference Championships on Saturday morning at UC Riverside's Ag/Ops Course.
Clayton Hutchins had the highest individual finish for the Mustangs for a team-best third time this fall. The sophomore (pictured at right) was sixth in the men's 8K race, at 24:15.0.
He was followed closely by junior Luis Morales (in seventh, at 24:19.5) and sophomore Dimitri Voytilla (eighth, 24:23.8).
Cal Poly also counted scoring contributions from junior Tyler Huntley (in 10th place, at 24:28.8), sophomore Riess Haslam (18th, 24:45.0), redshirt freshman Eric Sindel (21st, 24:49.6) and sophomore Eric Hayen (22nd, 24:54.2).
UC Santa Barbara junior Bryan Guijarro won in 23:47.4, leading the Gauchos to the title with 21 points, trailed by the Mustangs' 49 and the hosting Highlanders' 95.
Afterward, in the women's 6K, sophomore Ashley Windsor posted Cal Poly's top time, an eighth-place 20:53.1.
She was followed by freshman Sydney Szabo (in 10th, at 21:01.3), senior Ashley Bergstrom (11th, 21:08.6), junior Sara Van Dyke (17th, 21:37.0), freshman Melissa Eisele (20th, 21:42.0), junior Meghan Breadmore (23rd, 21:47.5) and sophomore Mary Jo Wright (24th, 21:50.5).
Competing on her home course, UC Riverside senior Raquel Hefflin paced the field at 20:12.6.
UC Davis ran to the team championship with a score of 36. Cal Poly's 66 was 20 points ahead of third-place UCSB's total.
